July Upspring-2024

July Movement will remain a memorable chapter in the history of Bangladesh forever. Because about 1500 fresh lives have been lost through this movement. In addition, more than 30 thousand people have lost their body parts and are now crippled and crying in the hospital. The July Movement started with the demand to abolish the quota system in government jobs. On 5 June 2024, a High Court bench of Justice KM Kamrul Quader and Justice Khizir Hayat declared the decision to scrap the quota system invalid. Immediately after the announcement of the verdict, students started protesting against this verdict in various universities of the country. Under increasing pressure and the determination of the army chief, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country to neighboring India. As a result, the people of the country were freed from the long dictatorship of almost 16 years. This uprising was not limited to the abolition of the quota system; it turned into a mass uprising of the people against the dictatorial government. The quota reform movement in 2024, also known as the July Revolution, is a memorable chapter in the history of Bangladesh. Students launched the movement against the existing quota system in government jobs after the High Court verdict. Led by the Anti-discrimination Students Movement, the students strengthened the movement through the “Bangla Blockade” and other programs. The deaths of students Abu Sayeed and Mir Mughda in police firing further fueled the movement, which spread across the country. When the government used the police and Chhatra League to control the situation, it turned into a massacre, in which many students and ordinary people were killed. One of the demands of the people in this movement was the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. Under increasing pressure and the determination of the army chief, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country to neighboring India. As a result, the people of the country were freed from the long dictatorship of almost 16 years. This uprising was not limited to the abolition of the quota system; it turned into a mass uprising of the people against the dictatorial government. July Movement which is termed as the second independence of Bangladesh. Because in 1971 the brutality shown by the Pakistani forces on the Bengalis, in July 2024 the autocratic government carried out similar brutality on the common people of Bangladesh just to stay in power. When the general student crowd took to the streets to demand the abolition of all types of quotas in government jobs, the government deployed its party forces to make the students leave the streets. On July 15, the Chhatra League attacked ordinary students at Dhaka University and injured thousands of students. As a result, the students of all kinds of educational institutions of Bangladesh took to the field and on July 16, Rangpur University student Abu Saeed was martyred by police firing. By this means the news of the first martyrs of the July revolution spread across the country and the general student crowd became more revolutionary and the movement gained more intensity. The result of which was the end of 16 years of autocracy and Sheikh Hasina’s government had to flee the country secretly. Through this, Generation G got the taste of Bangladesh’s second independence. Bangladesh gained independence for the second time on August 5, ending the history of 16 years of autocracy.

The movement that started in July 2024 centred around the quota movement and through this movement, Bangladesh was able to gain their second independence through the fall of 16 years of autocracy. This movement started in July. The overthrow of the government through this movement was originally called the July Movement. The quota reform movement of 2018 resulted in quota reforms in government jobs but the circular was scrapped in 2024. As a result, lakhs of job-seeking students took to the streets to demand quota reforms. But dictator Sheikh Hasina did not listen to the common students and instead called the students Razakars. As a result, angry students came out of Dhaka University and other public universities and held a protest march on the night of the 14th. As a result, on the 15th, the Government Chhatra League attacked Dhaka University’s common students and injured thousands of students. As a result, all the students of Bangladesh came down to the streets to protest. On the 16th, the police shot at Begum Rokeya University student Abu Saeed in Rangpur and Abu Saeed became the first martyr. After that, thousands of people, including Wasim Akram, sold their lives to achieve the second independence of Bangladesh. As a result, Sheikh Hasina’s government was forced to flee the country on August 5. As a result, Bangladesh was freed from a dictatorship after 1971 by achieving its second independence. So, the July Movement will be a historical event in the history of Bangladesh.
