Answer: Long long ago, King Lear ruled Britain. He had three daughters – Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. When the King became old he decided to divide his kingdom among his daughters. He called them in his court and they came.
The King asked all her three daughters how much they loved them. The King also made up his mind to give the largest share of his property to the one who loved him most. At first the king asked his eldest daughter Goneril. Goneril was a very cunning lady. She knew the subtle ways to please her father. She uttered in a very low voice:
“Dear father, I love you more than my life, my soul. In fact I love you more than I can say”. The King became very pleased at such a comment. He gave her one third of his kingdom.
Then the King asked his second daughter Regan. This Regan was also like her elder daughter. She too flattered her father and declared before the court:
“Dear Father, My love to you will never end or change”.
The King again became satisfied with his second daughter. He gave her another one third of his kingdom. At last it was the turn of her youngest daughter Cordelia. Cordelia was just opposite to her two elder sisters. She was honest both in her thinking and doing. When the King asked her about her love, she replied with a very simple answer:
“I love you as like as an ordinary daughter love her father”.
The King was displeased with his beloved daughter Cordelia. He failed to realize the true love of Cordelia and did the biggest mistake of his life. He deprived her of his property. With the evil advice of Goneril and Regan, He banished Cordelia from her kingdom. This single wrong decision of the old King led his life to a tragic end. When the King realized the true love of Cordelia, it was too late.
