Famous Bridges
4.Read the passage about the famous bridges. Complete the following table with information from the passage.
There are many kinds of bridges. Some carry motor vehicles or trains. Others allow people to cross rivers on foot. Drawbridges, such as Tower Bridge in London, lift up to let ships pass through them. Modern engineering methods made it possible to build bridges over very wide rivers or widely spaced island. Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, was built over the Arno River, Florence, Italy, in 1345. It has three arches supported by two stone piers. The piers are shaped to allow the river to flow past them easily. The longest span between two piers is 30 meter. The Golden Gate Bridge was built in 1937 in San Francisco, USA. Then it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. The span between the towers is 1280 meters. The bridge has a six-lane road and sidewalks. Towers on either side of the bridge hold up two steel cables from which the bridge hangs. Tower Bridge was built over the Tames River, Lomdon, England in 1894. It has two towers and a drawbridge. When a tall boat needs to pass through, the traffic on the bridge is stopped and roadside is raised. The span between two towers is 270 feet. |
