UNIT 4 Lesson 4(B) The Story of Lipi

In the next class Ms Choudhury tells her students the story of Lipi. In brief the story is like this: The year before last, Lipi, a 14-year old girl, had been in class 9 in a rural school in Rangpur.

পরবর্তী ক্লাসে মিস চৌধুরী তাঁর ছাত্রছাত্রীদেরকে লিপির গল্প বললেন। গত বছরের পূর্বের বছর, ১৪ বছরের বালিকা লিপি, রংপুরের একটি গ্রামের বিদ্যালয়ে নবম শ্রেণিতে পড়ে।

Lipi is the eldest of five children—three daughters and two sons. Their father is a day labourer working on other people’s land and mother is a homemaker and a part-time worker at other people’s houses.

লিপি পাঁচ সন্তানের মধ্যে বড়ো- দুই পুত্র এবং তিন কন্যার মধ্যে। তাদের বাবা একজন দিন মজুর যে অন্যের জমিতে কাজ করে এবং মা এজন গৃহিনী এবং অন্যের বাড়িতে খন্ডকালীন কর্মী।

The parents, particularly the mother, found it real difficult to raise five children on the small income the father could earn.

তাদের পিতামাতা, বিশেষভাবে মায়ের পক্ষে পিতার এই স্বল্প আয়ে পাঁচ সন্তানের লালন পালন করা বাস্তবে/ প্রকৃতপক্ষে কঠিন হয়ে দাঁড়াল।

Perhaps that is why Lipi’s father wanted to marry her off. But Lipi was not ready to accept what her parents wanted to impose on her.

সম্ভবত এই কারনে লিপির বাবা তাকে বিয়ে দিতে চেয়েছিল। কিন্তু লিপি বিয়ে করতে রাজি ছিল না, যা তার পিতা তার উপর চাপিয়ে দিতে চেয়েছিল।

She wanted to pursue her education. So long her mother stood by her, though secretly. But when her father arranged her marriage with Tara Mia, the only son of a farmer in the same village, she became a little upset.

সে তার পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যেতে চেয়েছিল। তার মা গোপনে হলেও তার পাশে ছিল। যখন তার পিতা ঐ গ্রামের এক কৃষকের ছেলে তারা মিয়ার সঙ্গে তার বিবাহের আয়োজন করল তখন সে গভীরভাবে হতাশ হয়ে পড়ল।

Tara Mia was a widower—illiterate, but well off. His father had a few acres of arable land and was influential in the village. The marriage seemed to be inevitable.

তারা মিয়া ছিলেন একজন বিপত্নীক-নিরক্ষর কিন্তু স্বচ্ছল।তা্র বাবার কয়েক একর চাষাবাদযোগ্য জমি ছিল এবং সে গ্রামে খুবই প্রভাবশালী ছিল। বিবাহটি তার কাছে অনিবার্য মনে হতে লাগল।

Lipi first talked with her classmates and then with the Headteacher, who was very sympathetic to her. He called a meeting of the teachers and students of the school.

লিপি প্রথমে তার সহপাঠীদের সাথে কথা বললো এবং পরবর্তীতে প্রধান শিক্ষকের সাথে, যিনি তার প্রতি খুবই সহানভিূতিশীল ছিলেন। তিনি বিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রছাত্রী ও শিক্ষকদের একটি সভা ডাকলেন।

Also the school managing committee members, some respectable persons of the village, Lipi’s and Tara Mia’s fathers attended the meeting.

তিনি বিদ্যালয়রে পরিচালনা কমিটির সদস্যদের এবং গ্রামের কতিপয় সম্মানিত ব্যাক্তিদের সভায় যোগদান করতে আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়ে ছিলেন।লিপির বাবা এবং তারা মিয়ার বাবাও সভায় উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

The Head teacher explained in detail the serious consequences that would follow Lipi’s marriage. She would be having children from her very early age — 15 or 16.

প্রধান শিক্ষক লিপির বিবাহের পরের ভয়ানক পরিনতি সম্পর্কে বিশদ ব্যাখ্যা করেছলেন।সে খুবি অল্প বয়সে ১৫ বা ১৬ তে সন্তানের মা হতে পারে।

It would create constant health hazards to her. Her education would stop. And on top of all, her marriage against her will might shatter her future dream.

এটি তার স্বাস্থ্যঝুকি সৃষ্টি করতে পারে। তার পড়াশোনা বন্ধ হয়ে যেতে পারে।সর্বোপরি তার ইচ্ছার বিরুদ্ধে বিবাহ, তার ভবিষ্যৎ স্বপ্ন ভেঙ্গে দিতে পারে।

At one stage, Tara Mia’s father stood up and tried to argue, “You are all making mistakes. Lipi would be very happy if she got married with Tara Mia.

এক পর্যায়ে তারা মিয়ার পিতা উঠে দাঁড়াল এবং যুক্তি প্রদশন করতে চেষ্টা তরল। “আপনারা ভুল করছেন। লিপি অত্যন্ত সুখী হবে যদি তারা মিযার সংঙ্গে তার বিয়ে হয়।

She would have everything—money, clothes, home and status in the society. Why are you trying to deprive her of this opportunity?”

সে সবকিছু পাবে —– টাকা, বস্ত্র, বাড়ি ও সামাজিক মর্যাদা। আপনারা কেন তাকে এ্ই সুযোগ থেকে বঞ্চতি করছেন?

But no, the big majority, who attended the meeting, supported the Headteacher. Lipi’s marriage was called off. She is now studying at Carmichael College, Rangpur.

কিন্তু না, উপস্থিত সবাই প্রধান শিক্ষককে সমথর্ন করল। লিপির বিবাহ হলো না। সে এখন রংপুর কারমাইকেল কলেজ পড়াশোনা করছে।
