I know you will wonder if I say the best thing that ever happened to me was when I lost my last job. Yes, really!

আমি জানি, তুমি বিস্মিত হবে যদি আমি বলি আমার জীবনে এখন পর্যন্ত কোনটি ছিল সবচেয়ে ভালো ঘটনা, তা হলো আমার শেষ চাকরিটা ছেড়ে দেওয়া। হ্যাঁ, সত্যিই!

I was a desk clerk in an office. But believe me I never liked my job. Nothing can be more boring than being stuck in an office all day with computers and telephone.

আমি একটি অফিসের ডেক্স কেরানি ছিলাম। কিন্তু বিশ্বাস করো আমি কখনো চাকরিটা পছন্দ করিনি। সারাদিন অফিসে কম্পিউটার এবং টেলিফোন নিয়ে বসে থাকার চেয়ে বিরক্তিকর আর কিছু ছিল না।

So after two years or so, I decided to leave my job though I had good salary there. Now I’m an owner of a nursery. Planting seeds, budding, grafting, taking care of saplings, cleaning the flower beds and spending time with trees are my full time job.

সুতরাং দুই বছর পর আমি সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলাম চাকরিটা ছাড়ার, যদিও আমার ভালো বেতন ছিল। আমি এখন তরুশালার মালিক।বীজ বপন, বৃক্ষরোপন/চারাগাছের যত্ন নেওয়া, ফুলতলি পরিস্কার করা এবং গাছের সঙ্গে সময় কাটানো হলো আমার সার্বক্ষনিক কাজের বিভিন্ন অংশ।

I start work very early. In summer I usually leave home at 5:30 in the morning, but in winter not until about 7. I’ve a small hut in my nursery.

আমি খুব সকালে কাজ শুরু করি। গ্রীষ্মকালে আমি সকাল পাঁচটায় বাসা থেকে বের হই, কিন্তু শীতকালে ৭টার পূর্বে না। আমার তরুশালায় একটি ছোট কুড়েঘর আছে।

There cannot be any more pleasure for me when I see the moon from there or walk through the trees in the soft moonlit night. The winter is just over. So I’m cleaning up the winter flower garden.

আমি যখন এখান থেকে চাদেঁর আলোতে হাটিঁ, চাঁদ দেখি তখন এর চেয়ে আনন্দের আর কিছু থাকে না। শীত মাত্র শেষ হয়েছে। সুতরাং আমি শীতকালের ফুলের বাগান পরিস্কার করছি।

Now I’m busy in producing more timber and medicinal plants which people will buy from July. Every season is so different and I love them all.

আমি এখন অনেক কাঠ গাছ এবং ঔষধি গাছের চারা উৎপন্ন করার কাজে ব্যস্ত, যা মানুষ জুলাই থেকে কিনবে। প্রতিটি ঋতুই ভিন্ন এবং আমি সব ঋতু পছন্দ করি।

When I compare my present days with the past, I simply can’t understand how I could survive there in my previous job.

যখন আমি আমার বর্তমান দিনগুলোর সাথে অতীতের দিনগুলোর তুলনাকরি, আমি বুঝতে পারি না যে, আমার পুরানো চাকরিটা নিয়ে কীভাবে বেঁচে থাকতাম।

I love nature. I just love working outside in the open air after all those months in a stuffy office. Gadgets never attract me and perhaps will never. I’m not married.

আমি প্রকৃতি ভালোবাসি। আমি মুক্ত আকাশে হাঁটাহাঁটিঁ করতে ভালোবাসি সারা মাস অফিসের বদ্ধ আবহাওয়া চেয়ে। যন্ত্র-সরঞ্জাম কখনোই আমাকে আকর্ষণ করে না এবং সম্ভবত কখনোই করবে না। আমি বিবাহিত নই।

I do my own work even cook my own food. I try not to depend on others for the work which I myself can do. Often my friends are annoyed with me.

আমি আমার নিজের কাজ নিজেই করি, এমনকি আমার খাবারও নিজেই রান্না করি।আমি চেষ্টা করি অন্যদের উপর নির্ভর করে না করতে সেই সব কাজের জন্যে যা আমি নিজেই করতে পারি। প্রায়ই আমরা বন্ধুরা আমার উপর বিরক্ত হয়।

They say, I should engage a maid for household chores. They are not happy to see me in this ‘rustic life’. They are professionals. They earn a lot. Maybe — much more than me but I think I enjoy my work more.

তারা বলে- ঘরের টুকিটাকি কাজের জন্য আমার একটা কাজের লোক নিযুক্ত করা উচিত। এই সাদামাটা জীবনে আমাকে দেখে তারা খুশি নন। তারা পেশাদার।তারা অনেক উপার্জন করে। হয়তো আমি যা করি তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি কিন্তু আমার ধারণা আমি আমার কাজকে অনেক বেশি উপভোগ করি।

At weekends, I often go countryside. Sometimes with my friends, sometimes alone. I love collecting unknown saplings. I have another hobby.

সপ্তাহান্তে, আমি প্রায়ই গ্রামাঞ্চলে যাই। কখনো একা কখনো বা আমার বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে যাই। আমি অপরিচিত চারা গাছ সংগ্রহ করতে পছন্দ করি।  আমার অন্য আরেকটি শখও আছে।

I love collecting stamps. I have a Russian stamp during the period of Lenin. I don’t watch TV. Almost everyone has a TV set these days. But I don’t have any. How is that?

আমি ডাকটিকিট সংগ্রহ করতে পছন্দ করি। লেনিনে সময় থেকে একটি রাশিয়ান ডাকটিকিট আমার নিকট আছে।

আমি টেলিভিশন দেখি না।

The only problem I face is I do not earn enough money in all seasons. The winter and the rain are two busy seasons for me.

একমাত্র সমস্যা, যার মুখোমুখিআমি হই, তা হলো সব ঋতুতে আমি যথেষ্ট অর্ত উপার্জন করি না। শীত ও বর্ষা আমার জন্য দুটি ব্যস্ত ঋতু।

But it’s OK. Maybe I do not earn enough like many other people around me. But I at least earn enough for my family, employees, and me to run a decent life. I must say I’m a very happy man!

কিন্তু এটা ঠিক আছে। হযতো আমি আমার চারপাশে অন্যান্য অনেক মানুষের মতো যথেষ্ট উপার্জন করি না। কিন্তু আমি অনন্ত আমার পরিবার, কর্মী ও আমার নিজের শালীন জীবন চালানোর জন্য যথেষ্ট উপার্জন করিঅ আমি অবশ্যই বলব যে, আমি খুব সুখী একজন মানুষ।
