My dear Rehan,
I have just got a letter from you. You wanted to know all about us how we are, but in return I send you an account of a very woeful tale of an accident.
You have possibly noticed that shocking news in todays newspaper. But I witnessed the same yesterday before my own eyes. I wonder how long its memory will haunt me. It was about 3 P.m. I was waiting for a friend in front of the Dainik Bangla Building in D. I. T. Avenue, with my face to the north (ie, Purana Paltan Road), I caught sight of an old man attempting to cross the road. My eyes followed him. When he had just reached the middle of the street a motor-car came from the direction of Motijheel Commercial Area. The man quickened his pace to avoid being knocked down, but when he was only a foot away from the foot path on the north a truck coming from the direction of the Bitul Mukarram knocked him down and before it was brought to a halt, one of its wheels was well on one of the poor manâs legs. I was watching the man, so I trembled all over when I saw him get in front of the speeding truck and shut my eyes. When I reopened them I found him lying. I rushed across the road and joined the small crowed that had gathered in front of the truck. The man was in great agony and it was soon discovered that the bone of one of his legs had been smashed. While we were busy with the poor victim, the driver of the truck sought to escape, but he was caught and handed to the police. We got the injured man to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. We were told that the smashed leg would have to be amputated
After an hour I got out of the hospital; but the agonized look of the poor old man kept recurring to my mind. I have a haunting of the accident and I cannot get back my usual memory composure. I can not concentrate on my studies and I fear I shall take some more time to recover from the shock.
Now, I am not in a position to write any more. More when we meet,
Yours ever
Muntasir
