Nakshi kantha is a kind of embroidered quilt.

নকশিকাঁথা হচ্ছে কাপড়ের ওপর হস্তশিল্প সংশ্লিষ্ট সূচিকর্মের নকশা তোলা এক প্রকার দৃষ্টিনন্দন কাঁথা।

The name was taken from the Bengali word, ‘naksha’ which means artistic pattern.

নামটি দেওয়া হয়েছে বাংলা শব্দ “নকশা” থেকে, যার অর্থ শিল্পকর্মের বা সূচশিল্পের ডিজাইন।

It is a kind of traditional craft and is said to be indigenous to Bangladesh and West Bengal in India.

এটি এক ধরনের ঐতিহ্যবাহী হস্তশিল্প এবং এটিকে বাংলাদেশের ও ভারতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গের দেশজ সূচিকর্ম বলে গণ্য করা হয়।

The art has been practised in rural Bengal for centuries.

শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী পল্লিবাংলার এই শিল্পটি চর্চা হয়ে আসছে।

The name ‘Nakshi kantha’ became popular after the poet Jasimuddin’s poem ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ was published in 1929.

১৯২৯ সালে কবি জসীমউদ্দীনের ‘নকশি কাঁথার মাঠ’ প্রকাশিত হওয়ার পর ‘নকশিকাঁথা” নামটি জসপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছে।

Traditional kanthas are made for family use. Old or new cloth and thread are used to make these quilts.

ঐতিহ্যবাহী কাঁথা পারিবারিক ব্যবহারের জন্য তৈরি করা হয়।এসব কাঁথা তৈরির জন্য পুরাতন বিংবা নতুন কাপড় ও সূতা ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Rajshahi, Faridpur, Bogra and Jessore are most famous for this craft.

ময়মনসিংহ, জামালপুর, রাজশাহী, ফরিদপুর, বগুড়া যশোর এ শিল্পের জন্য সবচেয়ে বেশি বিখ্যাত।

Now it is produced commercially.

এখন এটা বাণিজ্যিকভাবে তৈরি হয়।

You can find them in many expensive handicraft shops in cities.

বড় বড় শহরের অনেক দামি হস্তশিল্পের দোকোনে এসব পাোয়া যায়।

The quilts are now in great demand because of the colourful patterns and designs embroidered on them.

সূচিকর্মের মাধ্যমে এগুলোর ওপর বণার্ঢ্য নকশা  ডিজাইনের কারণে এসব কাঁথার চাহিদা এখন অনেক বেশি।
