WH-Questions?

WH-questions are used to ask for specific information and usually begin with a question word that starts with “Wh” (and one “H” word: how). These questions cannot be answered with just “yes” or “no” — they require more detailed answers.

🧩 WH-Question Sentence Structure

The general structure of a WH-question depends on whether the WH-word is the subject or not.

1. When the WH-word is the subject (no auxiliary verb is needed):

Structure: WH-word + main verb + (object/complement)?

Example:

  • Who called you?

  • What happened?


2. When the WH-word is not the subject (needs auxiliary verb):

Structure: WH-word + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + (object/complement)?

Example:

  • What did you eat?

  • Where are you going?

  • Why have they left?

    What does he want? (Not: What do he want?)

  2. Use the correct auxiliary for tense
    What did you see? (past)

  3. ‘Whom’ is formal and rare in speech
    → Often replaced with ‘who’ in casual conversation:
    Who did you invite? instead of Whom did you invite?

  4. Inversion Rule
    In WH-questions, the subject and auxiliary verb often invert:

    • Statement: You are going where.

6. WHEN – Asks about time

  • Q: When is your birthday?
    A: My birthday is on May 5th.

  • Q: When did you arrive?
    A: I arrived at 9 a.m.

  • Q: Where do you live?
    A: I live in New York.

  • Q: Where did you put my keys?
    A: On the kitchen table.


8. WHY – Asks for reason

  • Q: Why are you crying?
    A: Because I lost my wallet.

  • Q: Why did they cancel the meeting?
    A: Due to bad weather.
