HSC Unit:11 Lesson:2; Arriving in the Orient

Elizabeth spent thirty pounds on summer frocks and set sail immediately. The ship, heralded by rolling porpoises, ploughed across the Mediterranean and down the Canal into a sea of staring, enamel-like blue, then out into the green wastes of the Indian Ocean, where flocks of flying fish skimmed in terror from the approaching hull.

এলিজাবেথ গ্রীষ্মের ফ্রক বানানোর জন্য ত্রিশ পাউন্ড খরচ করল এবং শিগগির নৌপথে যাত্রা শুরু করল। গড়িয়ে চলা ডলফির-এর পতাকা তুলে জাহাজ এগিয়ে চলল ভূমধ্যসাগর এবং খাল পার হয়ে উজ্জ্বল, এনামেল-এর মতো নীল জল পার হয়ে এরপর চলে এলো ভারত মহাসাগরের সবুজ পতিত অঞ্চলে, যেখানে অগ্রসরমান জাহাজের কাঠামো দেখে ভয়ে উড়ুক্কু মাছের দল আলতোভাবে  পানির উপর দিয়ে উড়ে যায়।

At night the waters were phosphorescent, and the wash of the bow was like a moving arrowhead of green fire. Elizabeth loved’ the life on board ship….

রাতের বেলা পানি হয়ে ওঠে অনুপ্রভ/ অনুজ্জ্বল। আর জাহাজের অগ্রভাগের প্রক্ষালন যেন একটি চলন্ত সবুজ আগুনের তীরের মুখ। এলিজাবেথ জাহাজে ভ্রমণ ভালোবাসত। —

She was going to love India, she knew. She had formed quite a picture of India, from the other passenger’s conversation; she had even learned some of the more necessary Hindustani phrases, such as “idher ao,” “jaldi,” “sahiblog,” etc.

সে জানত সে ভারতকে ভালোবাসতে যাচ্ছে। যাত্রী সাধারণের কথা বার্তা থেকে সে ভারতের একটি চিত্র গঠন করে ফেলেছে। ”ইধার আও”, ”জলদি” এবং ”সাহিব লোক” ইত্যাদির মতো অধিক প্রয়োজনীয় হিন্দু¯থানী শিখে এসেছিল।

In anticipation she tasted the agreeable atmosphere of Clubs, with punkahs flapping and bare-footed white turbaned boys reverently salaaming; and maidens where bronze Englishmen with little clipped mustaches galloped to and fro, whacking polo balls. It was almost as nice as being rich, the way people lived in India.

আগের অনুমান থেকে সে ক্লাবের গ্রহণযোগ্য পরিবেশের স্বাদ নিয়ে এসেছিল, যেখানে পাংখা দোলে এবং সাদা পাগড়ি পরিহিত নগ্নপদী ছেলেরা সশ্রদ্ধ সালাম জানায় এবং মাঠে খাটো করে কাটা গোঁফ বিশিষ্ট ব্রোঞ্জ ইংরেজরা যত্রতত্র ছুটে বেড়ায়, পোলো বলে আঘাত করে। এটাই উচ্চবিত্তের জীবন এভাবেই ভারতে মানুষের জীবন চলে যায়।

They sailed into Colombo through green glassy waters, where turtles and black snakes floated basking. A fleet of sampans came reaching out to meet the ship, propelled bycoal-black men with lips stained redder than blood by betel juice.

ওরা সবুজ নিস্তরঙ্গ ও ঝকঝকে পানির ভেতর দিয়ে কলম্বোতে ঢুকেছিল, যেখানে কচ্ছপ আর কালো সাপেরা জলে ভেসে রোদ পোহায়। একদল সাম্পান জাহাজ ধরার জন্য এর কাছে চলে এলো, এগুলো চালাচ্ছিল কৃষ্ণ কালো লোকজন, যাদের পানের লাল রং ঠোট কে করেছিল আরো লাল।

They yelled and struggled round the gangway while the passengers descended. As Elizabeth and her friends came down, two sampan-wallahs, their prows nosing against the gangway, besought them with yells.

যখন যাত্রীরা নামত, তখন, ওরা যাত্রীদের চারদিকে চেঁচামিচি করত আর যুদ্ধে লিপ্ত হতো। এলিজাবেথ ও তার বন্ধুরা নেমে আসা মাত্র দুজন সাম্পানওয়ালা নৌকার গলুই বাড়িয়ে দিয়ে ওদেও সঙ্গে যেতে মিনতি প্রকাশ করল।

“Don’t you go with him, missie! Not with him! Bad wicked man he, not fit taking missie!” “Don’t you listen him lies, missie! Nasty low fellow! Nasty low tricks him playing. Nasty native tricks!” “Ha, ha! He is not native himself! Oh no! Him European man, white skin all same, missie. Ha ha !”

”ওর সঙ্গে যেওনা, মিসি! ওর সঙ্গে নয়! সে খারাপ লোক, মিসিকে সঙ্গে নেওয়ার মতো নয় সে!” ”তার মিথ্যা কথা শেনো না, মিসি সে বাজে নোংরা লোক! সে নোংরা খেলা খেলছে। নোংরা দেশি কৌশল! হা, হা! সে নিজে দেশি নয়! আরে না! সে ইউরোপীয় আদমী, পুরোপুরি সাদা চামড়া, মিসি। হা হা!

“Stop your bat, you two, or I’ll fetch one of you a kick,” said the husband of Elizabeth’s friend-he was a planter. They stepped into one of the sampans and were rowed towards the sun-bright quays.

”যে তোমরা দুজন, তোমাদের পাগলামি থামাও, তানা হলে ’আমি তোমাদের একজনকে একটা লাথি দিয়ে আসব,” এলিজাবেথের বন্ধুর স্বামী বলল- সে ছিল একজন উপনিবেশ ন্থাপনকারী। তারা সাম্পানগুলোর একটিতে পা রাখল আর রৌদ্রকরোজ্জ্বল জেটির দিকে ওদের নিয়ে যাওয়া হলো।

And the successful sampan-wallah turned and discharged at his rival a mouthful of spittle which he must have been saving up for a very long time.

আর সকল সাম্পানওয়ালা ঘুরল এবং তার প্রতিপক্ষের মুখে গালভর্তি থুথু ছুঁড়ে দিল, যে থুথু সে অনেক সময় ধরে জমা করে রাখার কথা।

This was the Orient. Scents of coco-nut oil and sandalwood, cinnamon and turmeric, floated across the water on to Mount Lavinia where they bathed in a lukewarm sea that foamed like Coca-Cola. She came back to the ship in the evening, and they reached Rangoon a week later.

এই হচ্ছে প্রাচ্যদেশ। নারকেল তেল আর চন্দনকাঠের গন্ধ, দারুচিনি আর হলুদের গন্ধ পানির উপর দিয়ে ভেসে চলে যেত ল্যাভিনিয়া পাহাড়ে জলে ভাসত যেখানে তারা কুসুম গরম সাগর জলে গোসল করত যা কোকাকোলার মতো ফেনা তুলত। সে আবার ফিরে এলো সন্ধ্যায় এবং এক সপ্তাহ পর রেঙুন পৌছাল।

North of Mandalay the train, fuelled with wood, crawled at twelve miles an hour across a vast parched plain bounded at its remote edges by blue rings of hills. White egrets stood poised, motionless, like herons, and piles of drying chillis gleamed crimson in the sun.

মান্দালয়ের উত্তরে কাঠের জালানী দ্বারা চালিত ট্রেনটি ঘণ্টায় বারো মাইল গতিতে শুকনো খড়খড়ে বিশাল সমভূমির ভেতর দিয়ে পাহাড়ের নীল বৃত্তের কাছাকাছি এর দূরবর্তী প্রান্তের দিকে ধীর গতিতে এগিয়ে চলল। সাদা সাদা সারস পাখি বকের মতো বিশেষ ভঙ্গিতে দাঁড়িয়েছিল নিশ্চল-নিথর হয়ে। আর রোদে শুকোতে দেওয়া লাল মরিচের স্ত‚প সূর্যের আলোতে গাঢ় লালে জ্জ্বলজ্জ্বল করছিল।

Sometimes a white pagoda rose from the plain like the breast of a supine giantess. The early tropic night settled down, and the train jolted on, slowly, stopping at little stations where barbaric yells sounded from the darkness.

সাদা প্যাগোডাগুলো চিৎ হয়ে শুয়ে থাকা অলস দৈত্যের স্তনের মতো সমতল ভ‚মিতে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল। গরমের রাত শুরু হয়ে গিয়ে ছিল। রেলগাড়ি ঝাঁকি দিয়ে চলছিল ধীরে ধীরে এবং ছোট স্টেশনগুলোতে থামছিল, যেখানে অন্ধকার থেকে বর্বও চেচামিচি ভেসে আসছিল।

Half-naked men with their long hair knotted behind their heads moved to and fro in torchlight, hideous as demons in Elizabeth’s eyes. The train plunged into the forest, and unseen branches brushed against the windows.

মাথার পেছনে লম্বা গেরো দেওয়া চুলওয়ালা অর্ধ উলঙ্গ পুরুষ লোকজন টর্চ লাইট নিয়ে এদিক সেদিক ঘোরাঘুরি করছিল। এলিজাবেথের চোখে এদের দৈত্যের মতো জঘন্য বলে মনে হচ্ছিল। রেলগাড়িটি বনের ভেতর ঢুকে গেল আর দৃষ্টির আঢ়ালে থাকা গাছপালার শাখাগুলো জানালায় ধাক্কা দিয়ে গেল।

It was about nine o’clock when they reached Kyauktada, where Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt were waiting with Mr. Macgregor’s car, and with some servants carrying torches. Her aunt came forward and took Elizabeth’s shoulders in her delicate, saurian hands.

প্রায় নয়টার দিকে তারা ক্যুকাটাডা পৌছলেন, যেখানে এলিজাবেথের চাচা-চাচী মি. ম্যাকগ্রেগর এর গাড়ি নিয়ে এবং টর্চ বহনকারী কতিপয় চাকর-বাকর নিয়ে অপেক্ষা করছিলেন। এলিজাবেথের চাচী এগিয়ে এলেন এবং তার কাঁধে আলতো করে রাখলেন নরম ও টিকটিকির মতো হাতগুলো।

“I suppose, you are our niece Elizabeth? We are so pleased to see you,” she said, and kissed her.

”আমার মনে হয়, তুমিই আমাদের ভাতিজি এলিজাবেথ? তোমাকে দেখে আমরা অনেক খুশি হয়েছি,” তিনি এই কথাগুলো বললেন এবং তাকে চুমু দিলেন।

Mr. Lackersteen peered over his wife’s shoulder in the torchlight. He gave a half-whistle, exclaimed, “Well, I’ll be damned!” and then seized Elizabeth and kissed her, more warmly than he need have done, she thought. She had never seen either of them before.

মি. ল্যাকরস্টিন তার স্ত্রীর কাঁধের ওপর দিয়ে টর্চের আলোতে মুখ বাড়িয়ে দিলেন। তিনি অর্ধ- শিস দিয়ে বিস্ময় প্রকাশ করে বললেন, ”আচ্ছা, আমি শেষ হয়ে যাবো।” এবং তারপর তিনি এলিজাবেথকে কাছে টেনে নিলেন এবং তাকে চুমু দিলেন, যতোটা দরকার ছিলো তার চেয়ে বেশি উষ্ণভাবে। সে এদের দুজনের কাউকেই আগে কখনো দেখেনি।
