21 February has been observed as Shaheed Dibosh every year throughout the country in remembrance of the martyrs of language movement of 1952.

১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলনের শহিদদের স্মরণে প্রতিবছর সারা দেশে একুশে ফেব্রæয়ারি শহিদ দিবস হিসেবে পালন করা হয়।

The occasion begins at the early hours of the day with mourning songs that recall the supreme sacrifices of our language martyrs.

এই স্মৃতি উৎসব শুরু হয় খুব সকালে আমাদের ভাষা শহিদদের চরম আত্মত্যাগের কথা স্মরণ করে শোক সংগীতের মাধ্যমে।

People wear black badges and go to the Shaheed Minar barefoot in procession, singing mourning songs. They place wreaths at the Minar.

মানুষেরা কালো ব্যাজ ধারণ করে এবং খালি পায়ে শোক সংগীত গাইতে গাইতে মিছিল করে শহিদ মিনারে যায়। তারা মিনারে শ্রদ্ধা নিবদেন করে।

Many of them visit the graves of the martyrs at Azimpur graveyard and pray for them.

তাদের মধ্যে অনেকে আজিমপুরে শহিদদের কবরস্থানে যায় এবং তাদের জন্য দোয়া করে।

They also attend various programmes organised in remembrance of the language martyrs.

তারা ভাষা শহিদদের স্মরণে অনুষ্ঠিত বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠানে অংশগ্রহণ করে।

The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) on 17 November in 1999 proclaimed February 21 as the International Mother Language Day in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs for the rightful place of Bangla.

১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কো (জাতিসংঘের শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান এবং সাংস্কৃতিক সংস্থা) বাংলাকে সঠিক স্থানে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে শহিদদের আত্মত্যাগের মর্যাদা দ্ওেয়ার জন্য ২১ শে ফেব্রæয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে।

Two Bangladeshi expatriates living in Vancouver in Canada, Rafiqul Islam and Abdus Salam, sent a proposal to Kofi Annan, the then Secretary General of the United Nations.

কানাডার ভাঙ্কুভারে বসবাসরত রফিকুল ইসলাম ও আবদুস সালাম নামক দুই বাংলাদেশি প্রবাসী জাতিসংঘের তৎকালীন মহাসচিব কফি আনানের নিকট একটি প্রস্তাব পাঠিয়েছিলেন।

They requested him to declare 21st February as the International  Mother language Day.

তাঁরা তাকে ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে ”আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস” হিসেবে ঘোষণা করতে অনুরোধ করেন।

They added that the decision would honour and save all extinct languages of the world.

তাঁরা আরো বলেন, যে সিদ্ধান্তটি বিশ্বের সব লুপ্ত ভাষাকে সম্মানিত ও রক্ষা করবে।

As per their logical expectation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina then took prompt initiatives by sending formal proposal to UNESCO.

তাঁদের যৌক্তিক প্রত্যাশা মোতাবেক, প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা তখন ইউনেস্কো- তে আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রস্তাব পাঠিয়ে ত্বরিত উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করেন।

Finally, on 17 November 1999, UNESCO declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day.

অবশেষে, ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কো ২ শে ফেব্রæয়ারিকে ”আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস” হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে।

The day is now annually observed worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

ভাষাগত ও সাংস্কৃতিক বৈচিত্র এবং বহুভাষিতার সচতেনতা বৃদ্ধি করতে এদিনটি প্রতি বছর সারা পৃথিবীতে উদ্যাপিত হয়।
