Unit: 6; Lesson 2: Sri Lanka: The pearl of the Indian Ocean

a .When someone comes to Sri Lanka, they may often hear the word Ayubowan. This word means ‘May you have the gift of long life’. It is with this traditional greeting that everyone is welcomed to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has many nicknames: Serendip, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Pearl of the Indian Ocean, etc. These names  reveal the richness and beauty of this island nation. Many travellers, from ancient mariners and merchants to modern astronauts, have been attracted by the beauty of this island.

যখন কেউ শ্রীলঙ্কায় আসে, তারা প্রায়ই আয়ুবোওয়ান শব্দটি শুনতে পারে। এই শব্দের অর্থ হল ‘ আপনার দীর্ঘায়ু দান হোক’। এই ঐতিহ্যবাহী শুভেচ্ছা দিয়েই সবাইকে শ্রীলঙ্কায় স্বাগত জানানো হয়।  শ্রীলঙ্কার অনেক ডাকনাম আছে: সেরেন্ডিপ, সিলন, ভারতের টিয়ারড্রপ, ভারত মহাসাগরের মুক্তা,  ইত্যাদি। এই নামগুলি এই দ্বীপ জাতির সমৃদ্ধি এবং সৌন্দর্য প্রকাশ করে। অনেক ভ্রমণকারী, প্রাচীন থেকে আধুনিক মহাকাশচারী থেকে নাবিক এবং ব্যবসায়ীরা, এই দ্বীপের সৌন্দর্য দ্বারা আকৃষ্ট হয়েছে।

b Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean, just off the south-eastern coast of  India. Shaped like a teardrop, the island of Sri Lanka measures about 415 kilometres from north to south, and about 220 kilometres from east to west, with a total land  area of about 65,600 square kilometres. It has more than1340 kilometres of coastline.

শ্রীলঙ্কা ভারতে অবস্থিত মহাসাগর, দক্ষিণ-পূর্বে ভারতের উপকূল। আকৃতির টিয়ারড্রপ, শ্রীলঙ্কার দ্বীপ পরিমাপ প্রায় ৪১৫ কিলোমিটার উত্তর থেকে দক্ষিণ, এবং প্রায় 220 পূর্ব থেকে পশ্চিমে কিলোমিটার,  সঙ্গে মোট জমির আয়তন প্রায় ৬৫,৬০০ বর্গ কিলোমিটার. এর বেশি আছে ১৩৪০ কিলোমিটার উপকূলরেখা।

c Despite its modest size Sri Lanka has a population of about 20 million. Sri Lanka  is a multi-religious, multi-racial and multi-lingual country. The four major ethnic  groups are Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamils and Sri Lankan Moors or  Muslims. A fifth group, the Veddhas are the original inhabitants of the island.  The ancient history of Sri Lanka is depicted in the Hindu epic the Ramayana.  But the most important work on Lankan origin is related in Mahavamsa or‘The Great  Chronicle’.

তার পরিমিত আকার সত্ত্বেও শ্রীলঙ্কার জনসংখ্যা প্রায় ২০ মিলিয়ন। শ্রীলংকাএকটি বহু-ধর্মীয়, বহু-জাতিগত এবং বহুভাষিক দেশ। চারটি প্রধান জাতিগত গোষ্ঠীগুলি হল সিংহলি, শ্রীলঙ্কান তামিল, ভারতীয় তামিল এবং শ্রীলঙ্কান মুর বা মুসলমানদের। পঞ্চম গোষ্ঠী, বেধরা দ্বীপের আদি বাসিন্দা।

শ্রীলঙ্কার প্রাচীন ইতিহাস হিন্দু মহাকাব্য রামায়ণে চিত্রিত হয়েছে।কিন্তু লঙ্কান উৎপত্তির সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ  কাজটি মহাবংসা বা ‘দ্য গ্রেট’-এ সম্পর্কিত ক্রনিকল’।

d Sri Lanka’s economy has traditionally been based on agriculture. The emphasis is on exporting crops such as tea, rubber, and coconuts. In fact, Sri Lanka is the largest tea exporter of the world. The country is also a major producer and supplier of a variety of spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. Cinnamon first originated in Sri Lanka and was introduced later to the world by the Arab merchants.

শ্রীলঙ্কার অর্থনীতি ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে কৃষিভিত্তিক। জোর দেওয়া হয়চা, রাবার এবং নারকেলের মতো ফসল  রপ্তানির উপর। আসলে শ্রীলঙ্কা বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম চা রপ্তানিকারক। দেশটিও একটি প্রধান উৎপাদক এবং দারুচিনি, এলাচ, গোলমরিচ, লবঙ্গ এবং বিভিন্ন ধরনের মশলার সরবরাহকারী জায়ফল দারুচিনি প্রথম  শ্রীলঙ্কায় উদ্ভূত হয়েছিল এবং পরে এটি চালু হয়েছিল আরব বণিকদের দ্বারা বিশ্ব।

e Sri Lanka’s archaeological treasures reflect the civilizations of the past that covered the golden age of Greece, the Roman Empire, Mayan citadels, and Napoleonic greatness. The culture that followed those glorious pasts has been enriched by the more recent influences of Western colonizers and Eastern traders. That resulted in developing a unique mix of races and religions, arts and crafts, festivals and costumes available in this small country.

শ্রীলঙ্কার প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক ভান্ডার অতীতের সভ্যতার প্রতিফলন ঘটায় গ্রিসের স্বর্ণযুগ, রোমান সাম্রাজ্য, মায়ান  দুর্গ এবং নেপোলিয়নের মহানুভবতা। সেই গৌরবোজ্জ্বল অতীতকে অনুসরণ করা সংস্কৃতি ছিল পশ্চিমা  ঔপনিবেশিক এবং পূর্ব ব্যবসায়ীদের সাম্প্রতিক প্রভাব দ্বারা সমৃদ্ধ। এর ফলে জাতি এবং ধর্ম, শিল্প ও  কারুশিল্পের একটি অনন্য মিশ্রণ গড়ে উঠেছে, এই ছোট দেশে উৎসব এবং পোশাক পাওয়া যায়।

f Besides these man-made riches, one may find the God-given blessings of nature in Sri Lanka. The island is blessed with azure seas, sandy beaches, green hills, cascading waterfalls, abundant wildlife and a variety of flowers and fruits. The Colombo: The capital city country abounds with coconut groves, spice gardens, tea estates and many other gardens and woods. Travellers from all over the world come  to Sri Lanka. Here, a weary traveller can pass a gloriously lazy day by a  palm-shaded lagoon looking atthe endless ocean. And for the adventurous, days can  be full of excitement, snorkeling, swimming, fishing or sailing.

এই মানবসৃষ্ট সম্পদ ছাড়াও, কেউ প্রকৃতির ঈশ্বর প্রদত্ত আশীর্বাদ খুঁজে পেতে পারে শ্রীলঙ্কায়। দ্বীপটি  আকাশী সমুদ্র, বালুকাময় সৈকত, সবুজ পাহাড়, ক্যাসকেডিং জলপ্রপাত, প্রচুর বন্যপ্রাণী এবং বিভিন্ন  ধরণের ফুল ও ফল। দ্য কলম্বো: রাজধানী শহর দেশটি নারকেল খাঁজ, মশলা বাগান, চা দিয়ে পরিপূর্ণ এস্টেট এবং অন্যান্য অনেক বাগান এবং কাঠ। সারা বিশ্ব থেকে পর্যটকরা আসেন শ্রীলঙ্কায়। এখানে, একজন ক্লান্ত ভ্রমণকারী একটি মহিমান্বিতভাবে অলস দিন পার করতে পারে পাম-ছায়াযুক্ত লেগুন অফুরন্ত সমুদ্রের দিকে তাকিয়ে আছে। এবং দুঃসাহসিক জন্য, দিন পারেনউত্তেজনায় পূর্ণ, স্নরকেলিং,  সাঁতার কাটা, মাছ ধরা বা পালতোলা।
