Begum Khaleda Zia is a distinguished political leader of Bangladesh. She was born on 15 August 1945 in Dinajpur. She is the widow of Ziaur Rahman, who founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). After the tragic assassination of her husband in 1981, she became actively involved in politics and gradually emerged as a key leader of the BNP. Khaleda Zia played an important role in the movement to restore democracy in Bangladesh during the 1980s. She later became the Prime Minister of the country three times—in 1991, 1996, and 2001—becoming the first woman to hold the office in Bangladesh. During her leadership, she focused on developing education, expanding infrastructure, and strengthening the economy. She also worked to promote democratic values and political stability, although her career was marked by political rivalry and challenges. Despite ups and downs, Khaleda Zia remains a significant figure in the political history of Bangladesh and has made notable contributions to the country’s governance and democratic development. She died 30 December 2025 in Ever Care Hospital.
