I DIED FOR BEAUTY By, Emily Dickinson

Unit 2: Lesson -1

I DIED FOR BEAUTY

By, Emily Dickinson

I died for beauty, but was scare

Adjusted in the tomb,

When one who died for truth was lain

In an adjoining room.

He questioned softly why I failed?

‘For beauty, I replied’

‘And I for truth- the two are one;

We brethren are. He said.

And so, as kinsmen met a –night,

We talked between the rooms,

Until the moss had reached our lips,

And covered up our names.

Theme:

“I Died for Beauty” deals very directly with the themes of beauty and truth. Dickinson portrays them as parallel in various ways. Both are represented by someone who died for them; both are buried in the same tomb near each other; both die and decay at around the same time; and both names are covered by the same moss.

Theme: The themes of the poem are beauty and truth. Death is also the theme of the poem

The poet says that she died for beauty, but she was hardly adjusted to her tomb before a man who died for truth was laid in a tomb next to her. When the two softly told each other why they died, the man declared that Truth and Beauty are the same, so that he and the poet were “Brethren”. They met at night “as Kinsmen” and talked between their tombs until the moss reached their lips and covered up the names on their tombstone. Their deaths for noble causes make them spiritual akin. In fact the poem gives an aesthetic impression of beauty.
