Often I’m so sorry to see the footpaths occupied by floating people. They are living in some makeshift houses.

ভাসমান মানুষের দ্বারা নগরীর ফুটপাত দখল হতে দেখে আমি প্রায়শই খুব দুঃখ পাই। তারা অস্থায়ী কুটিরে বাস করছে।

I simply cannot think how father, mother grandfather, grandmother and kids are living in such a tiny place. Within few yards in their possession they are sleeping, socializing, cooking and even beautifying themselves.

আমি চিন্তাও করতে পারি না যে এত ছোট জায়গায় তারা বাবা, মা, দাদা, দাদি এবং ছেলেমেয়ে সবাই কীভাবে থাকে। মাত্র কয়েক গজের মধ্যে তারা ঘুমায়, রান্না-বান্না করে, সামাজিকতা, নিজেকে সৌন্দর্যমন্ডিত করে।

These people are living in such an inhuman condition! This cannot be the picture of life in a civilized society.

এ মানুষগুলো এমন অমানবিক অবস্থায়  জীবনযাপন করেছে। সভ্য সমাজের জীবনচিত্র এমন হতে পারে না।

Also they are polluting the area. They are the least bothered about their health and hygiene. Out of my curiosity, I talked to some of these people.

তারা এলাকাকে দূষিতও করছে।তারা তাদের স্বাস্থ্য ও পরিচ্ছন্নতার ব্যাপারেও খুব কম সচেতন। উৎসাহের বসে আমি এদের কারো কারো সাথে কথা বলেছিলাম।

They have their own home and identity at their own village. They are here thinking that the city life will make their life better.

গ্রামে তাদের নিজেদের বাড়ি ও পরিচিতি আছে। তারা মনে করে যে শহর তাদের জীবন উন্নত হবে।

What an irony! Can’t the society or the state do anything for these people? However, I must admit that I’m amazed to see how they sometimes tidy up the place especially in the evening!!

বিধির কী পরিহাস! সমাজ বা রাষ্ট্র কি তাদের জন্য কিছু করতে পারে না? অবশ্য, তাদের আবাস্থল পরিপাটি করতে দেখে বিশেষত সন্ধ্যবেলায় আমি অবাক হয়েছি।

I understand your concern. Human flow from the rural areas to the urban areas is a big social problem in many countries like ours.

আমি তোমার উদ্বেগ বুঝি। গ্রাম থেকে শহরে মানুষের চলাচল আমাদের মতো অনেক দেশে একটি বড়ো সামাজিক সমস্যা।

These floating people are definitely a burden to the cities where they migrate. When the number is huge, it is difficult for any state to rehabilitate them quickly.

এ ভাসমান মানুষগুলো যে শহরে যায় সেখানকার জন্য নিশ্চয়ই একটা বোঝা। যখন সংখ্যাটি বেশি হয় তখন এদেরকে দ্রুত পুনবার্সন করা যে-কোন রাষ্ট্রের পক্ষে কঠিন।

See from the other side. The people you have referred to have lost their roots and they are unable to assimilate in the new culture.

অন্য দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে দেখ, তুমি যাদের কথা বলছ তারা বাস্তুহারা এবং নতুন সংস্কৃতির সাথে একাত্ম হতে পারছে না।

May be many of them are attracted by the gloss of the cities, but I’m sure it was a need to many others. People become rootless sometimes due to climate change, river erosion, social discrepancies, or
poverty.

হতে পারে তাদের অনেকেই শহরের জৌলুস দ্বারা আকৃষ্ট হয়েছে কিন্তু আমি নিশ্চিত যে তাদের অনেকের জন্য তা প্রয়োজন। কখনো কখনো জলবায়ুর পরিবর্তন, নদী ভাঙন, সাসাজিক বৈষম্য বা দারিদ্র্যর কারণে মানুষ বাস্তু হারা হয়।

However, you cannot solve this problem overnight. But you can take steps to improve their lifestyle.

অবশ্য এই সমস্যা তুমি রাতারাতি  সমাধান করতে পারো না। তবে তাদের জীবন যাত্রার মান উন্নয়নে তুমি নিশ্চই পদক্ষেপ নিতে পারো।

Why don’t you form a committee with other young people in your locality that will teach them basic health, hygiene, and ethics? It may better their life as well as help you minimize pollution.

কেনো তুমি এলাকার  যুবকদের নিয়ে একটা সংঘ গড়ে তোল না যারা তাদেরকে মৌলিক স্বাস্থ্য ও পরিচ্ছন্নতা শিক্ষা দিবে? এটা তাদের পরিবেশ দূষণ কমাতে সাহায্য করবে।

Give it a try.
