UNIT: 14; Lesson 10 (B): The Three Caskets

Bassanio went to Belmont to visit Portia grandly dressed, with many servants. Portia’s father had died lately. Before his death he had thought of an unusual plan to find a good husband for his daughter.

জমকালো পোশাকে বাসানিও বেলমন্টে গিয়েছিলেন পোর্টিয়ার সাথে দেখা করতে, অনেক চাকর বাকর  সাথে নিয়ে। পোর্টিয়ার বাবা সম্প্রতি মারা গেছেন। তার মৃত্যুর আগে তিনি তার মেয়ের জন্য একজন ভাল স্বামী খুঁজে বের করার একটি অস্বাভাবিক পরিকল্পনার কথা ভেবেছিলেন।

He wanted a man to marry Portia for herself and not for her wealth. He had three caskets made, one of gold, one of silver and one of lead.

তিনি চেয়েছিলেন একজন পুরুষ পোর্টিয়াকে নিজের জন্য বিয়ে করুক, তার সম্পদের জন্য নয়। তার তৈরি তিনটি কস্কেট ছিল, একটি সোনার, একটি রূপার এবং একটি সীসার।

One of the caskets had Portia’s portrait in it. The suitor, who would first choose the casket with the portrait would marry her.

কসকেটগুলির একটিতে পোর্টিয়ার প্রতিকৃতি ছিল। প্রার্থী, যে প্রথমে প্রতিকৃতির সাথে কাসকেট বেছে নেবে তাকে পোর্শিয়াকে বিয়ে করবে।

Many suitors went away when they heard about such a strange condition. The first one to try was the prince of Morocco. He thought that silver and lead are poor metals.

এমন অদ্ভুত ব্যবস্থার কথা শুনে অনেক প্রার্থী চলে গেলেন। প্রথম চেষ্টা করেছিলেন মরক্কোর রাজপুত্র। তিনি মনে করতেন যে রৌপ্য এবং সীসা দরিদ্র ধাতু।

It is the casket made of precious metal that can hold the precious picture. So he chose the gold casket.

এটি মূল্যবান ধাতুর তৈরি কাসকেট যা মূল্যবান ছবি ধারণ করতে পারে। তাই বেছে নিলেন সোনার কৌটা।

But all he found was a picture of a skull with a message that said, “All that glitters is not gold.” The prince was very sad and went back home.

কিন্তু তিনি যা খুঁজে পেলেন তা হল একটি খুলির একটি ছবি যাতে একটি বার্তা ছিল যেটি বলেছিল, “যা কিছু চিকচিক করে তা সোনা নয়।” রাজপুত্র খুব দুঃখ পেয়ে বাড়ি ফিরে গেলেন।

Then came the prince of Spain. He looked at the silver casket for a long time. On it was written, “ He who chooses me will get what he deserves.” The prince had a very high opinion about himself. He thought that he deserved the best.

এরপর এলেন স্পেনের যুবরাজ। অনেকক্ষণ তাকিয়ে রইলো রূপার পাত্রের দিকে। তাতে লেখা ছিল, “যে আমাকে বেছে নেবে, সে তার প্রাপ্য পাবে।” রাজপুত্রের নিজের সম্পর্কে খুব উচ্চ ধারণা ছিল। তিনি ভেবেছিলেন যে তিনি সেরাটা পাওয়ার যোগ্য।

He therefore chose the silver casket and opened it. Inside the casket he found the picture of a blinking fool. He was very disappointed and offended. He immediately rode away.

তাই তিনি রূপার কস্কেট বেছে নিয়ে তা খুললেন। গয়নার বাক্সের ভিতর সে এক পলকহীন বোকার ছবি দেখতে পেল। তিনি খুব হতাশ এবং বিক্ষুব্ধ ছিল. তিনি সঙ্গে সঙ্গে চড়ে চলে গেলেন।

Then it was Bassanio’s turn. He looked at the caskets for a long time. He thought, “ Appearances are often misleading. Bad men appear good and they hide their inner ugliness under fine clothes.”

তারপর বাসানিওর পালা। সে অনেকক্ষণ তাকালো কাসকেটগুলোর দিকে। তিনি ভেবেছিলেন, ” চেহারা প্রায়শই বিভ্রান্তিকর হয়। খারাপ লোকেদের ভালো দেখায় এবং তারা তাদের ভেতরের কদর্যতাকে সুন্দর পোশাকের নিচে লুকিয়ে রাখে।”

So he chose the plain looking lead casket. On opening the casket, he found the portrait of Portia inside.

তাই তিনি বেছে নিলেন সরল চেহারার সীসার কস্কেট। ক্যাসকেট খুলে ভিতরে পোর্টিয়ার প্রতিকৃতি দেখতে পান।

Bassanio and Portia got married. There was great joy at Belmont and the newly married couple were
spending their time happily.

বাসানিও এবং পোর্টিয়া বিয়ে করেছিলেন। বেলমন্টে এবং সদ্য বিবাহিত দম্পতিতে দুর্দান্ত আনন্দ ছিল আনন্দে তাদের সময় কাটছে।

But soon their happiness turned into sorrow by a piece of news. A messenger came with a letter from Antonio.

কিন্তু শীঘ্রই এক টুকরো খবরে তাদের সুখ দুঃখে পরিণত হয়। একজন বার্তাবাহক এন্টোনিওর একটি চিঠি নিয়ে এলেন।

The letter said, “ Dear friend Bassanio, all my ships have been lost at sea. I cannot pay the money I owe to Shylock. So I have to pay the penalty.

চিঠিতে বলা হয়েছে, “প্রিয় বন্ধু বাসানিও, আমার সব জাহাজ সমুদ্রে হারিয়ে গেছে। শাইলকের কাছে আমার পাওনা টাকা আমি দিতে পারব না। তাই জরিমানা দিতে হবে।

Dear friend, come and see me if possible. I would like to see you once before I die.” Bassanio quickly left for Venice.

প্রিয় বন্ধু, সম্ভব হলে আমাকে দেখতে আসুন। আমি মরার আগে তোমাকে একবার দেখতে চাই।” বাসানিও দ্রুত ভেনিসের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হলেন।
