JSC Unit: 7; Lesson-2(B); The Ama Drivers 2

In some fishing villages along the coast of Japan, there are amazing groups of women known as Ama divers’. These women worked and are still working as Ama.

জাপানের সমুদ্র উপকূলে অবস্থিত কিছু জেলে পল্লিতে মহিলাদের বিষ্ময়কর দল আছে- তারা “আমা ডুবুরি” নামে পরিচিত। এই মহিলারা আমারূপে কাজ করত এবং এখনো করছে।

The word ‘Ama’ means ‘women of the sea or sea women’. They are independent divers.

“আমা” শব্দের অর্থ হচ্ছে সমুদ্রের নারী অথবা সমুদ্র-নারী। তারা স্বাধীন ডুবুরী।

They make their living by diving. They can dive to the depth of the sea up to 25 meters.

তারা ডুবুরির কাজ করে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে। সমুদ্রের গবীরে ২৫ মিটার পর্যন্ত তারা ডুব দিয়ে যেতে পারে।

And they dive without using oxygen tanks or other breathing equipment. The Ama divers rely on their own skills and breathing techniques.

এবং তারা কোন অক্সিজেন ট্যাংক বা শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাসের সরঞ্জাম ছাড়াই ডুব দিয়ে যেতে পারে। “আমা” ডুবুরীরা তাদের নিজদের দক্ষতা ও শ্বাসক্রিয়ার কৌশলের উপর নির্ভর করে।

They use that skill and technique to push themselves down to the bottom of the sea and back to the surface again.

সমুদ্রের তলদেশ পর্যন্ত নিজেদেরকে ঠেলে নিয়ে যেতে এবং সেখান থেকে আবার উপরিভাগে ফিরে আসতে তারা সেই দক্ষতা ও কৌশলকে কাজে লাগায়।

They can hold their breath for up to two minutes. Careful watching, lung capacity and hunter instincts are the special qualities of Ama divers.”

তারা দুই মিনিট পর্যন্ত শ্বাস বন্ধ রাখতে পারে। সতর্ক অবলোকন, ফুসফুসের সক্ষমতা ও শিকারি প্র্বণতা হচ্ছে আমা ডুবুরিদের বিশেষ গুণাবলি।

However some of these young villagers are going to the city for other jobs. The remaining Ama divers are now aged between 50 and 60.

যাহোক, এসব পল্লিবাসী যুবতিদের কেউ কেউ অন্যান্য কাজের জন্য শহরে চলে যাচ্ছে। অবশিষ্ট আমা ডুবুরিদের বয়স এখন ৫০ এবং ৬০ এর মধ্যে।

But there are still some who continue to dive even at their 70s. If the young people do not take up Ama diving, soon this profession will die out.

কিন্তু এখনো কিছু কিছু আমা ডুবুরি আছে যারা সত্তরোর্ধ পদার্পণ করেও ডুবুরির কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। যুবতিরা যদি আমা ডুবুরির পেশা আর গ্রহণ না করে, তাহলে এটি অচরেই বিলুপ্ত হয়ে যাবে।
