class 7 english chapter 7 question answer

7.2 Read the note given below and discuss in groups/pairs.

Answer:

Discussion on Principal and auxiliary verbs:

Student 1: Hi Raktim! What’s up? Why do you look so upset?

Student 2: Nipa, I’ve got very poor marks in my English class test on classification and usage of verbs.

Student 1: Ah, I see. Listen! Verbs are mainly two types – Principal Verbs and Auxiliary Verbs.

Student 2: I know that. But tell me how to differentiate them and their usages.

Student 1: OK. Principal verb is main verb that expresses an action or state of something, for example the verb ‘love’ in ‘I love you’ and the verb ‘am’ in I am beautiful’ are principal verbs.

Student 2: Then, what is the principal verb in the sentence ‘I do not like her’?

Student 1: You see, there are two verbs, ‘do (not)’ is an auxiliary or helping verb and ‘like’ is the principal verb.

Student 2: How do you identify them?

Student 1: You see, here ‘like’ is the main meaningful verb, so it’s principal whereas ‘do (not)’ is just helping the principal verb grammatically, expressing its (principal verb’s), tense, mood and voice. So, it’s the auxiliary or helping verb.

Student 2: I got it. Without a principal verb any auxiliary verbs cannot stand alone in a sentence, right?

Student 1: Yeah, right. So, if there is just one verb in a sentence, it is the principal verb, for example ‘am’ in I am beautiful’. But ‘am’ in I am doing the work is an auxiliary verb.

Student 2: Ah, I see. To express a change in the tense, mood and voice of the principal verb, we have to change the form of the auxiliary verb here. Then the sentence could be ‘was the whole work not being done by me?’

Student 1: Yeah, here ‘Was (not) being, this part is auxiliary. We use several form of ‘do’ ‘be’ and ‘have’ verbs as auxiliary verbs.

Student 2: Aha! Now it’s so clear to me. Thank you so much. Nipa.

Student 1: You are welcome, dear.

7.5 Read the text. Then, write in pairs/groups how different underlined actions (verbs) are done. One is done for you.

I’m Rumela. Sometimes I visit the nearby market with my parents. Last Friday, I went to the market to buy some books and food items. There, I saw different people doing different activities. A young man was talking to the shopkeeper gently. And the shopkeeper was helping the young man to choose a shirt. I saw that the two middle-aged women were talking seriously to each other. The shop assistant was very busy and she was showing the customers different ornaments patiently. A little girl, standing beside her mother was eating a banana gladly. A cleaner was sweeping the road hastily/neatly. One of the security guards was checking seriously whether everyone wore the masks or not. And when I went to the girl’s washroom, I saw the cleaner asking everyone gently to use the washroom properly. All of this helps me to learn how to talk with different people and also inspires me to be gentle and patient.
