HSC Unit : 11; Lesson: 1; Travelling to a village in Bangladesh

We set out on the evening of July 21st. Food was scarce in the village so Abdul packed a suitcase with two loaves and some tea and tins of milk, cheese and jam.

আমরা জুলাই মাসের ২১ তারিখে সন্ধ্যায় রওনা দিলাম। গ্রামে খাদ্য সংকট ছিল, তাই আব্দুল দুটো পাউরুটি এবং কিছু চা আর দুধের কৌটা, পনির আর আচার সুটকেইসে নিয়ে ছিল।

We traveled Intermediate class in a cross-country train not uncomfortably crowded, through a

country of shadowy loveliness.

আমরা একটা গ্রামের দিকে ছুেট চলা রেলগাড়ির দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণিতে ভ্রমণ করেছিলাম। গাড়িতে অসহনীয় ভীড় ছিল না। আমরা চলছিলাম ছায়াঢাকা সৌন্দর্যমন্ডিত এলাকার মধ্যে দিয়ে।

It was a moonlit night of broken soft clouds; the land was mostly under water, with paddy and coco-palms growing from it, and a few raised cart-tracks and groups of cottages islanded among clumps of bushes, all reflected among shadows.

এটা ছিল জ্যোৎস্নাত রাত। আকাশে ছিল ছেঁড়া ছেঁড়া নরম মেঘপুঞ্জ। জমিজমা ছিল প্রধানত জলমগ্ন। এখানে সেখানে মাথা তুলেছিল ধান আর তাল নারকেলের গাছপালা।যার গুচ্ছ গুচ্ছ ঝোপঝাড় ঘিরে রেখেছিল গরুর গাড়ি চলার রাস্তা আর কুটির শ্রেণি, এগুলো সবই প্রতিফলিত হচ্ছিল।

Here and there was the red glow of a cooking-fire or the lantern of a fisherman’s boat in open water. At dawn we reached Sonaimuri, a small canal-side station among wide fields, from there we had eight more miles by country boat, some of it along the canal, some of it across the flooded paddy fields.

এখানে সেখানে উন্মুক্ত জলরাশিতে দেখা যাচ্ছিল রান্নার আগুনের আর জেলেদের লণ্ঠনের লাল আভা। ভোর বেলায় আমি পৌছালাম সোনাই মুড়িতে। বিশাল বিশাল মাঠের মাঝে খালের ধারে ছোট স্টেশন। সেখান থেকে ডিঙ্গি নৌকায় করে আমাদের আরও আট মাইল যেতে হয়েছিল। এর কিছু অংশ খালের মধ্য দিয়ে আর কিছু অংশ জলমগ্ন ধান ক্ষেতের মধ্য দিয়ে।

I was looking forward to that tranquil water-journey in the early morning, and tranquil it must have been, for I fell instantly asleep and knew no more till we reached the landing-ghat at Khorshed’s house, in a blaze of sunlight.

আমি সকালবেলা এ ধরনেরই একটা শান্ত জল-ভ্রমণ চেয়েছিলাম, আর এটা শান্তই ছিল কেননা আমি তক্ষুনি ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিলাম আর সকালে সূর্যের আলোতে খোরশেদের বাড়ির ঘাটে পৌছান পর্যন্ত কিছু জানিনি।

It turned out that his letter saying that he was bringing me was still on its way, but they rallied to the crisis and gathered round to make me welcome, though as none of them spoke any English they could only stare and laugh and offer me coco-nut juice.

জানা গেল যে, সে (আব্দুল) আমাকে সঙ্গে করে নিয়ে আসছে এই বার্তাবহ টিঠিটা তখনও পৌছেনি। তবে তারা (গ্রামবাসীরা) সংকটে পরেও সামলে নিয়েছিল এবং আমাকে অভ্যর্থনা জানাতে সমবেত হয়েছিল। য়দিও তাদের মধ্যে কেউই ইংরেজি বলত না, তারা কেবল একদৃষ্টে তাকিয়ে দেখছিল, হেসেছিল আর নারিকেল পানি (খেতে) দিয়েছিল।

Khorshed set me up a camp, a wooden bed, chair and table in a thatched bamboo outhouse. It was a lovely spot among bamboo and coco-palms, facing a tank where fireflies wove intricate dances at night.

খোরশেদ আমার জন্য একটা শিবির স্থাপন করে দিল। একটা কাঠের বিছানা, বাড়ির বাইরে একটি খড়ের ঘরের মধ্যে চেয়ার আর টেবিল। এটা ছিল বাঁশঝাড় আর তাল নারকেলের মধ্যে এক অনুপম ¯থান, সামনে একটা পুকুর, যেখানে রাতের বেলা জোনাকিরা মনোরোম নৃত্য জাল বোনে।

He put his own bed beside it for protection, and there I stayed, holding permanent court from dawn to bedtime. Within village memory-and that went back for some two centuries, I was the first European to go there:

নিরাপত্তার জন্য এর পাশেই সে তার নিজের বিছানা পেতেছিল। আর সেখানে আমি থাকতাম সকাল থেকে রাত অবধি  স্থায়ী একটি মজলিস ধারণ করে। এই গ্রামের ইতিহাসে দুই শতাব্দী পেছনে তাকালেও আমিই ছিলাম কোন ইউরোপিয়ান হিসেবে সেখানে আগমকারী।

It was too remote even for a District Commissioner to pass through. Also since I was a woman, the women could come (at different times from the men) to look at me without losing their characters.

এই গ্রামটা এতটাই নিভৃতে ছিল যে, কখনো কোনো জেলা প্রশাসকও সেখানে আসেননি। তাছাড়া আমি একজন মহিলা ছিলাম বলে মহিলারা (পুরুষদের থেকে ভিন্ন সময়ে) তাদের চরিত্রের হানি না করে আমাকে দেখতে আসত।

People kept coming and coming: only the rains and the fact that few of them were rich enough to have boats prevented them from coming from ten miles round.

লোকজোনের আসা চলতেই থাকল। কেবল বৃষ্টি আর হাতে গোনা কয়েকজন নৌকা থাকবার মতো যথেষ্ট ধনী হওয়ার জন্য আশেপাশের দশ মাইল এলাকা থেকে আসা থেকে নিবৃত্ত করতে পেরেছিল।

When he saw that they would not stop coming Khorshed fixed some curtains round the bed so that I could crawl behind them when I was tired of being looked at, like a zoo animal into its sleeping hut.

খোরশেদ যখন দেখল যে, তাদের আসা বন্ধ হচ্ছে না, সে তখন আমার বিছানার চারপাশে একটা পর্দা তুলে দিল যাতে করে যখন আমি তাদের সঙ্গে সাক্ষাতের কারণে ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়লে, যেন হামাগুড়ি দিয়ে এর পেছনে চলে যেতে পারি, যেভাবে চিড়িয়াখানায় প্রাণীরা ঘুমাবার স্থানে যায়।

Even then the little hut would fill up with women and children. Children followed when I went out, and when Khorshed remonstrated a small boy pleaded, “Don’t send us away! After she’s gone not even a strange bird will come to the village.”

তখনো ঐ ক্ষুদ্র ঘরটি মহিলা আর শিশু দ্বারা ভরে যেত। আমি যখন বাইরে যেতাম তখন ছেলেমেয়েরা দলধরে আমার সঙ্গে যেত। আর খোরশেদ যখন বারণ করেছিল; তখন একটি ছোট ছেলে অনুরোধ করে বলল, ”আমাদের তাড়িয়ে দিবেন না! উনি যখন চলে যাবেন, তখন কোনো অপরিচিত পাখিও এই গ্রামে আসবে না।”

I stood up to the celebrity for the two days we had planned, but it was enough.

আমরা যে দুদিনের পরিকল্পনা করেছিলাম সে দিনগুলোতে আমি বিশেষ ব্যক্তি হয়ে উঠলাম, তবে তা যথেষ্ট ছিল।
