Sohan lives in a village in the south-west part of Bangladesh. Last night he could not sleep. His sister had the SSC exam next morning. She could not read either.

সোহান বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিন-পশ্চিম অংশে এক গ্রামে বাস করে। গতরাতে সে ঘুমাতে পারেনি। পরের দিন সকালে তার বোনের এসএসসি পরীক্ষা হয়েছিল। সেও পড়তে পারে নি।

There was-load shedding. The summer night being sticky hot, life became hell without electricity. Most of their area remained dark for hours due to power shortage.

বিদ্যুৎ বিভ্রাট ছিল। গ্রীষ্মের রাত খুবই অসহনীয় গরম হওয়ায়, বিদ্যুৎ ব্যতীত জীবন দুর্বিষহ হয়েছিল। বিদ্যুৎ সংকটের কারণে ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা অধিকাংশ এলাকা অন্ধকারে ছিল।

In May-June, temperature shoots up to 40 degree Celsius. With almost 90 per cent of humidity in the atmosphere, it becomes all sweat, wet, damp and stinky.

মে-জুন মাসে তাপমাত্রা ৪০ ডিগ্রী সেলসিযাস পর্যন্ত পেৌছায়। প্রায় ৯০ ভাগ স্যাঁতস্যাতেঁ পরিবেশে এটি ভিজা, স্যাঁতস্যাঁতে ও আঠালোকরে ফেলে।

When you are busy fanning yourself all the time, how come you concentrate on studies? In the
night it is impossible to sit in the study with a candle light or table lamp or hurricane lamp or a rural kerosene lamp.

যখন সকল সময় আমরা নিজেকে বাতাস করতে ব্যস্ত, কিভাবে তখন পড়ায় মনোযোগ দেবে? রাতের বেলা মোমবাতির আলো বা টেবিল ল্যাম্পে বা হারিক্যান অথবা গ্রামীণ কেরোসিনের বাতির সাহায্যে পড়তে বসা অসম্ভব।

People simply come out of houses almost bare-bodied and sit in the open places. Some splash cold water on their faces. Fans are still, lamps are out and it is dark everywhere. It is simply unbearable.

মানুষেরা সাধারণত খালি গায়ে ঘর থেকে বের হয়ে আসে এবং খোলা জাযগায় বসে। অনেক মুখমন্ডলে পানি ছিটায়। পাখা স্থির হয়ে আছে, বাতি নিভে চলে গেছে এবং সর্বত্র অন্ধকার। এটা এক কথায় অসহনীয়।

What is the reason of frequent load-shedding? Press reports say there is a shortage in electricity production.

প্রায়শঃই বিদ্যুৎ বিভ্রাটের কারণ কি? সংবাদের প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয় বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনে ঘাটতি রয়েছে।

According to the Power development authorities, the demand for electricity a few years ago was more than 6,000 MW* a day while the supply remained around 4,200 MW.

বিদ্যুৎ উন্নয়ন কর্তৃপক্ষের মতানুসারে প্রতিদিন বিদ্যুতের চাহিদা ৬০০০ (ছয় হাজার) মেগাওয়াট যেখানে সরবারহ থাকে ৪২০০ মেগাওয়াট।

In the rural areas, the Rural Electrification Board (REB) could supply barely half of the total demand which was around 2,400 MW per day.

গ্রামীণ এলাকায় বিদ্যুাতায়ন বোর্ড (আরইবি) সর্বমোট চাহিদার বড়জোড় অর্ধেকেরেও কম সরবারহ করতে পারে যা দৈনিক প্রায় ২৪০০ মগোওয়াট।

In the capital city, the demand stood at around 1,400 MW while the supply amounted to 650 MW. As a result, load-shedding is unavoidable for the time being. But situation is improving very fast.

রাজধানী শহরে প্রায় ১৪০০ মেগাওয়াট চাহিদা থাকত সেখানে সরবারহ হত ৬৫০ মেগাওয়াট। সুতরাং বিদ্যুৎ বিভ্রাট স্বল্প সময়ের জন্য এড়ানো অসম্ভব। কিন্তু অবস্থার খবি দ্রুত উন্নতি হচ্ছে।
